South Dakota tribes buck trend and see growth at their casinos

Monday, March 7, 2011

Indian gaming revenues fell for the first time nationwide in 1998 but tribes in South Dakota saw growth at their facilities, according to the new Indian Gaming Industry Report.

Tribes in South Dakota operate 11 facilities. They took in $103 million in 2009, a 3 percent increase from the year prior.

The tribes are seeing growth despite limits on their ability to expand. The current Class III compact limits each tribe to 250 machines and governors have not been willing to negotiate.
